The Bath YMCA gymnastics program has been recognized as the 2025 Region 6 Xcel “Club of the Year” by USA Gymnastics, an honor that highlights the team’s excellence both on and off the competition floor.
The award was presented on August 15 at the Region 6 Congress in Warwick, Rhode Island, where Bath YMCA coaches Kym Granger and Jennie Bakewell accepted the honor on behalf of the program. Region 6 encompasses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York.
In her remarks, Carol Brewer, chair of US Gymnastics – Maine, praised the program’s impact:
“This small but mighty team proves that heart, dedication, and grit can overcome any obstacle. At every meet, the Bath YMCA athletes are known for encouraging others, helping out when needed, and representing their club and state with pride.”
Brewer also highlighted Coach Kym Granger’s leadership:
“[Coach Granger’s] passion, perseverance, and her commitment to her athletes inspire everyone in the Maine gymnastics community.”
This recognition follows a standout season for Bath YMCA gymnastics. In May, the team earned top honors at Northeast Regionals, competing against a field of more than 900 gymnasts from across New England and New York.
“To be recognized by the entire region is the highest honor for our Bath YMCA program. It speaks to how our coaches and athletes embody the values of the USA Gymnastics Xcel Program: sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, and fun,” said Granger.
The Xcel program of USA Gymnastics provides athletes ages 5 to 18 with opportunities to compete in a supportive and flexible environment, making gymnastics accessible to a wider range of athletes.
For over 50 years, the Bath YMCA’s award-winning gymnastics program has provided a safe and encouraging space for budding gymnasts to build their confidence and skills. Classes are offered for youth from preschool age to high school, and participants can work up to competitive-level team gymnastics in the program.
