Beginning this week, construction crews will begin drilling and blasting rock ledges on the site of our future Early Learning Center at the Bath YMCA. We anticipate drilling and blasting to take 3 – 4 weeks.
This is an exciting step in preparing the site for construction, but it will entail some disruption to Y staff and members. We are sharing the following information to help minimize disruptions to members and programs during this phase of construction.
Blasting Procedures:
Prior to blasting
Crews will do a security check of the affected area and a portion of Centre Street, as well as the entrance to our parking lot and the half-circle loading/unloading area in front of the Y, will be closed to traffic. Staff and members will be unable to enter or exit the parking lot during blasting and will be asked to remain inside the Y or in their vehicles. Crews and Y staff will be present to direct members.
Blasting crews will use a series of warning whistles to signal when blasting is taking place.
They are as follows:
- 3 audible signal pulses = 5 minutes to blast
- 2 audible signal pulses = 1 minute to blast
- 1 audible signal pulse = Blasting complete, all clear
During blasting
Expect a quick, loud sound similar to a thundercrack.
After blast
Crews will inspect the site and determine if it is safe to continue construction. 1 signal pulse will identify that it is all clear.
FAQ:
When will blasting take place?
We expect blasting to take place multiple times a day beginning on Wednesday, July 16. We are working with crews to identify ideal windows of time for blasting to minimize disruption during high-volume times at our Y such as pick up and drop off. We expect blasts to take place mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
Is anything else happening besides blasting?
Yes, crews will be drilling and crushing rock throughout this process. Expect a consistent stream of construction noise throughout the day.
If members have questions, whom should they contact?
Questions about the blasting process and impacts can be directed to Senior Property Director Matthew Baker at matthew@bathymca.org.
